A LEVEL ESSAY COMPETITION

RULES AND TIMETABLE.

1. The competition is open to all A level students in the UK other than those who are related to or know the competition organisers.

2. Applications to enter the competition must be received by the organisers by the 1st of October 2000.

3. Because only a limited number of applications can be accepted, we have to make a selection from all the application forms sent in. The selection is made on the basis of the best essay plans ( maximum 100 words ) that we receive with this application form.

4. If your application to compete is successful, you will be notified at your school by the 15th of October 2000.

5. Applicants who are selected to enter the competition must then submit a typewritten essay that has a maximum of 2000 words not counting diagrams, tables and references. The typewritten text must be double spaced on A4 size paper.

6. The competition essays must be returned to the organisers by the 1st of December 2000.

7. The names of the winners will be posted on the ukexams.com web site on the 1st of January 2001.

8. A student is only allowed to enter for one of the two competitions ( either the Economics or the Science ) and each student is only allowed to make one entry for her or his chosen subject.

9. Prizes of £100, £50 and £25 will be awarded to the three best entries for each essay topic.



ESSAY TOPICS AND GUIDELINES.

1. The essay topics for the Autumn 2000 competition are as follows:

For the Economics competition essay ; " Should Britain join the euro ? "

For the Science competition essay ; " Will there be enough energy for the 21st century ? "

2. The examiners are looking for well constructed arguments, clarity and where possible originality.

3. For the Economics essay, the entrants will be expected to be objective and technical rather than focusing on the more political aspects of the issue.

4. For the Science essay, the entrants will be expected to take a global view and give clear brief explanations of the scientific principles involved in the energy extraction processes for the energy sources mentioned.
