Scotland's educational system is different from that of the
rest of the UK and although candidates in Scotland can take the GCSEs and A levels of non-Scottish UK boards
, the vast majority of candidates in Scotland sit Scottish equivalents. The SQA
is the sole board which oversees the setting and marking of these exams. The Scottish
"higher" is the approximate equivalent of an A level, for GCSEs the equvalent
is the standard grade.
